A few quotes...

When I have nothing to write :), I like to share some quotes or proverbs. Here are a few quotes that I enjoyed:

"A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song."
Lou Holtz

"When it is dark enough, you can see the stars. "
 Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Ce n'est pas en enfermant ton prochain dans une maison de santé que tu prouveras ta raison."
I couldn't find the english translation, so I translated it myself. Feel free to correct me!
"Confining your neighbor in a mental institution will not make you sane"Fedor Mikhaïlovitch Dostoïevski

Just saying hello :)

It's been a long time since my last post, and the truth is I won't be posting much until christmas.
The holiday season is the busier season of the year for artists and crafters, so I am mainly busy preparing for it.
I am preparing some new batiks for kids rooms.
I am also preparing to open a gallery at Imagekind. My friend photographer Dana Nedelea inspired me to do so. She has her photo gallery there, and it is awesome!!!

I hope you are all fine and doing well, and I will do my best to read some of my favorite blogs.

Enjoy this beautiful ( yet cold :)) autumn!!!

STEAMPUNK SALON SALOON

I have exiting news folks!! "Steampunk Salon Saloon", The 3rd edition of Steampunk by Brooklyn Indie Market will be held on the 24th of september at the Water Lounge in Brooklyn at 3PM.

The steampunk movement totally fascinates me, and I have to say that this is the type of innovative events that makes me love Brooklyn so much.

For those of you who are not familiar with the steampunk movement, here is how Kathy Malone; the director of The BIM (The Brooklyn Indie Market) and avant-guarde organizer of the event defines it:

"Steampunk is Victorian-era science fiction. Anything that can be envisioned as a part of a scientifically-advanced “steam” era can be prop- erly described as steampunk. Steampunk finds its origins in literature, going back to the works of Mary Shelley, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. The term was coined in the late 1980s by sci-fi author K.W. Jeter as a bit of a tongue-in-cheek joke. The moniker nonetheless stuck, and has found itself attached to an entire array of movements and works, each trying to realize today’s technology with the 19th century’s resources."

So if you are up to some time traveling into the past-future, then join us for "Steampunk Salon Saloon"on the 24th of september at the Water Lounge. The time machine will start at 3 PM, and Kathy Malone promised to bring us back to earth around 9 PM,.. unless we don't want to come back anymore :)

And for those interested in volunteering at the BIM this year, please drop me a line.

Malian proverbs.

I will be introducing my collection in a few days.
As I am busy adding the last touches, I do not have much time to blog.
I am taking a few minutes to share a few Malian proverbs with you.
Enjoy!

No matter how long a log stays in the water, it won't become a crocodile.

It's better to look ahead rather than focusing on where we have tripped before.

The bee forced into a beehive will not make any honey.

Whatever the taste of the meal, don't swallow your tong.

It is from a tiny seed that the biggest tree was born.

Everyone can register here: Amnesty International

Recycle for Amnesty

I also took the decision to look for a volunteer job in a human right organization,
and this makes me feel good!!!
So if any of you know about an opening at amnesty international, human right watch or any other
human right organization, please feel free to let me know.
This quote resume pretty well why I am taking this decision!

I keep my ideals, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.

My last post

My next holiday!

I am starting dreaming at my next holiday, and here is the place I would love to visit! Unfortunately for me, it is only for very rich peoples and stars. As I am not a star yet, nor I am rich, I can either save money, either play lotto, or either spend my holiday in New Jersey.LOL.
The thing is I never play Lotto, and New Jersey is not very exotic, so I have no real choice, I have to save money, and hope that the economy will improve, but again, I am not a player :). Or I could  also create a paypal donation button for my blog. But then it would not fit in my blog design, and I hate disharmony!!
Ok, so my only option is to save money, and hope!!!

Love poem

This is one of my favorite love poem by Jacques prevert.

For you my love

For you, my love
I went to a bird market
And I bought a bird
For you
My love
I went to a flower market
And I bought a flower
For you
My love
I went to a junk market
And I bought a chain
A heavey chain
For you
My love
And I went to a slave market
And I searched for you
But I couldn't find you anywhere
My love

Invictus

The 10 june was the opening of the soccer world cup in South-Africa :).
This is the first time This event happens in Africa.
I am not a big soccer fan, but as I am half African, I am very proud that the world cup finally takes place in Africa, and even more proud that it is in South Africa.

Yesterday, I watched the movie "Invictus". I never made a movie critic, and will not start today :).
I was just surprised by the content, and this is what I wanted to share with you.
I new it was about Nelson Mandela, but was surprised to discover that it was not about his fight to defend his ideal and liberate his country from apartheid, but in reality about the way he managed to reunite the majority of African natives ( who were mistreated for years) with those who mistreated them, the Africaaners.
It is while watching this movie that I understood how a great person is Mandela. I have always admired him for the great personal sacrifices he has made to liberate his country ( 27 years in prison...), but I had underestimated the greatness it needed to reconcile these two enemies. The greatness it needed to forgive one who has hurt you and who has treated you very badly.
I also realized how nothing is eternal, and how life surprises us.
Mandela makes me very proud of my African origins, and I am sure, the whole african continent will stand very proud.

"Invictus" the title of the movie comes from this beautiful poem that has inspired and encouraged Mandela not to give up during his years of captivity.
I confess that I just discovered the poem after watching the movie:

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
William Ernest Henley.

An englishman abroad

There is something really great  and magical with people who follow their dreams!

Ian is one of them. He is An Englishman Abroad, who has decided to accomplish his dreams. One of them is to travel to 100 countries and to live in at least 20 of them.

This was one of my secret dreams that I left on my way into life, and I know I will never accomplish it. In two words, I gave up. So you can imagine the feeling of Joy, Envy, pleasure I have living my dreams through his eyes. Because one of the beauties of our modern world resides on sharing through internet, Ian shares his experiences with us in this great blog: An Englishman abroad. His photos are absolutely amazing!

I am sure the visionary Jules Verne had him in mind when writing his famous novel :). He is the  Phileas Fogg of the 21st century.

I know Ian has another dream that he wants to accomplish, but I will let you discover it by yourself in his blog. Enjoy your travel without moving from your sit!!

Below are some of the pictures you can enjoy in his blog.

I had to stop because I was about to copy the integrality of his blog here, which is not the goal :)))

Thank you Ian for sharing your beautiful dream with us!

My studio was featured!

Angel's hair studio was featured in this lovely blog: "Where people create".

Ann the owner of http://www.amg-arts.com, is also the creator of this lovely blog where she features artists and their workspace.
I find this idea really fun and interesting. On her blog you can view the different workspaces of many artists, who also answers her interview questions This gives you a better understanding of the personality of the artists.
As I said before, Ann is the owner of Amg-arts, and you can view her etsy store at www.torann.etsy.com, and her website here. And of course, if you want to be aware of new listing and changes on her website, you can subscribe to her facebook page here.

Below are some of her collage that I really Enjoy!

Interview with Maria Jose

My friend Maria Jose is my guest today!

She is a really talented designer, and the Owner of Maria Palito.
I have been following her for the past year, and have seen her slowly building a solid artist brand.
"Don't give up" was the title of her past blog. She did not gave up. The character and company of the same name she created, Maria Palito, is the reflect of her mindset: positive, creative, determined.
I love Maria Jose's designs! She explores a wide range of fields, jewelry design, character design, handmade cards and handmade dolls and webdesign. I am particularly fund of her characters design. They are so playful and colorful!

You can view her online portfolio here. I have to say that it accomplishes its goal and speak for itself!
Her lovely website also worth to be seen!!! www.mariapalitousa.com. And of course, don't forget to visit her blog, and her fan page on facebook!

The interview:

Me: Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?
Maria: I am 29 years old, I was born and raised in Colombia, South America and came to US almost three years ago to marry my current husband. I am an architect and I love everything about design. I am currently a web design freelancer and I work in illustration and design of many sorts; I love reading, taking photographs and designing stuff. I consider myself restless when working on my own projects. I also love to write, draw and blog

Me: How did you come to create mariapalitousa.com?

Maria: mariapalitousa.com started years ago in my country when I started making cards for friends, then I started putting everything together in a blog and working and developing new projects. I consider www.mariapalitousa.com a lifestyle and a life project because through that project I have found my own style and I have learned a lot about myself.

Me: Where do you find your inspiration?

Maria: I love colors, I like to play with them and make different compositions. I like to create fantasy characters and bring them to live.

Me: What are your goals?
Maria: I want to be famous… Just kidding. I want to do whatever I have to do to get my projects done; I want to be a computer gig and learn a lot about web design. I want to continue developing www.mariapalitousa.com and to be successful. I have a very happy life but every day I have a goal to achieve and a new future one.

Me: Do you believe in your lucky star?Maria: I believe everybody has a lucky start, but not everybody follow its path. Luck is an excuse or a way to explain the magic around success for people who believe and work for their own projects. Bad Luck is something to blame for those who are afraid to get control over their own lives. I decided to work for it.

Me: Do you have periods of doubts?
Maria: Of course I have, more often that I would like to have them.

Me: How do you deal with those periods of doubts?
Maria: I close my eyes, stop myself and breathe. Then I start doing something to fix my problem or making something creative to use my mind in something more proactive.

Me: What method do you use to find back your energy?
Maria: I take a bath, a long walk, or a nap. Sometimes I listen to music to make me feel alive.

Me: Is it effective?
Maria: Yes it is for me. I believe to get your energy back you need to make something that make you feel alive.

Me: What is your motto in life?

Maria: My family, be a good daughter, a good wife, a good mother in the future. Be creative, and have a happy life.

Thank you Maria!!!
